The term “Allied Health” is used to identify a cluster of health professionals, encompassing as many as 200 careers. Essentially, there are two broad categories: Technicians, such as physical therapy assistants, medical laboratory technicians, radiological technicians, occupational therapy assistants, recreation therapy assistants, and respiratory therapy technicians. Therapists and technologists evaluate, diagnose conditions, and develop treatment plans. The U.S. Department of Labor projects employment in the health care industry to increase 27% through 2014 and reports that employment growth for health care is expected to account for 3.6 million new wage and salary jobs.
