A Note from the Director–The Chain Newsletter, Winter 2020 A One Stop Shop for Jobs

What if we could make it easier for Washingtonians to learn about, find training in, and ultimately gain work in an industry with more than 100,000 family wage jobs? What industry am I talking about? The global trade and supply chain sector which regular readers of The Chain know there are 152,000 global trade and supply jobs in Washington state, with high average wages. And you don’t need to be a software engineer or have a PhD to get these jobs either.

But often you do need training and you need to understand the various types of jobs in the sector. And most people won’t know how to apply for these jobs. That’s why your Center of Excellence for Global Trade and Supply Chain Management is working to build a Jobs Dashboard on our website. This new Jobs Dashboard will provide data and information on the types of jobs available in the sector, how much those jobs pay, where one can gain training to get those jobs and a listing of jobs and internship opportunities in the sector.

We will model this on the jobs dashboard on the Construction Center of Excellence website. The Economic Analysis of the Global Trade and Supply Chain sector we conducted last year provided us with excellent data on the type, quantify and pay of jobs in our sector. As the Construction Center did, we will display this information in a user friendly, graphically helpful way on our website so prospective workers can see where and what the jobs are and how much they pay on average. We will also provide information on where they can get training to be qualified for these jobs. And, we will post job listings for these types of jobs, as well as internship opportunities.

A ballpark estimate to create the Jobs Dashboard is around $50,000. We need to raise most of these funds. If you are interested, or know of an organization or company who would be interested, in sponsoring our Jobs Dashboard, please let us know. Help your family member, friend, our community, find a rewarding career in this growing, key industry of Washington state.
